Lions: New Voices on the Hill

July 1, 2018 was history in the making with the installation of the first female International President of Lions Club International. President Gudrun, acknowledges her upbringing in Iceland for her non-gender bias and her belief in looking Beyond the Horizon.

Quickly putting into place a push for membership, President Gudrun appointed women around the world as leaders in her new initiative, New Voices. Empowering women to join the one time all-boys club, and to step up and assume leadership roles.

Using new voices, Lions of all ages, experiences and genders are servicing needs around the globe.

This past May 30, 2019 nearly 100 Lions, dignitaries and special guest speakers gathered to celebrate women in Lionism during the first ever-held New Voices Women in Lionism Symposium on Parliament Hill in Ottawa. Nationally recognized leaders such as Sophie Gregoire Trudeau, Spouse of the Prime Minister and Myriam Monsef, Minister for Women & Gender Equity, delivered inspirational and motivation presentations while congratulating Lions on the good work they do for those in our country and around the world.

During a cocktail reception several Lions were presented with Recognition Awards for their outstanding commitment to New Voices and Lionism. Among those receiving the International President’s Certification of Achievement were Stephenville Lions Brenda Dennis for Marketing and Corinne Tulk for Leadership.

In addition, Lion Corinne was awarded two previously presented Lions accolades: the Medal of Leadership and the highest recognition in the international organization, the Ambassador of Good Will medal.

With such a great successful first run, you can be sure that this won’t be the last symposium of this kind. Congrats to all organizers and to all New Voices. With men and women coming together for the better of our world, how can it not possibly be better?
