When you can’t beat it! Join it!

Can’t beat it, join it! That seemed to be the mentality of the Stephenville Lions Club during this year’s Winter Carnival. Sponsoring the weekend-long celebration, the club hosted several activities including the opening ceremonies. Although the weather didn’t always play nice, the Stephenville Lions Club opened its doors to any and all who wanted to come in to play.

From opening ceremonies to cranking the tunes and watching the young folk “get groovy” during the Children’s Sockhop to donning their best indoor impression of a winter’s day many who ventured the weather enjoyed themselves. Seniors enjoyed a hot delicious bowl of soup with many excitedly shouting “bingo” during a friendly afternoon game.

When ice threatened the outdoor Family Fun Fest, the creative Community Studies students who coordinated, transformed the Lion’s hall into a winter festive area. Families visited several stations competing against one another in fun activities entering their name for prize draws.

Nearly 200 folks braved the cold and joined for a home cooked breakfast complete with pancakes, bologna and eggs on the final morning.

Sunday afternoon, shouts of encouragement and praise were heard as many came to join in a game of darts in memory of Jim and Irene Nurse.

While Mother Nature and Old Man Winter may have done their best to put a damper on winter, the Stephenville Winter Carnvial committee, complete with several Lions members, were pleased with the turnout and the feedback and are ready for the challenge again next year!
